Study shows that people who drink gin are healthier

Image
by Paul Moore   We've all got that friend. James Bond usually drinks his trademark Vesper Martini, a drink that mixes both gin and vodka, and a recent survey has shown that Bond's tipple of choice - and that of thousands of other people - might make them healthier to other people. A new study, published in online journal  BMJ Open , suggests that certain alcohols can have an impact on your emotions as well as your behaviour. The study - which surveyed 30,000 people aged between 18- 34 in over 21 countries - discovered that people who drink spirits, beer and wine all had different answers to questions about their thoughts and feelings. During the survey, participants were asked to associate different types of booze with the following emotions: energised, relaxed, healthy, confident, tired, aggressive, ill, restless and tearful. The study, which was conducted by experts at Bangor University and King’s College London, discovered that while spirits ...

Statistical test relates pathogen mutation to infectious disease progression

Image
Nucleic acid sequencing methods, which determine the order of nucleotides in DNA fragments, are rapidly progressing. These processes yield large quantities of sequence data -- some of which is dynamic -- that helps researchers understand how and why organisms function like they do. Sequencing also benefits epidemiological studies, such as the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of genetic and/or contagious diseases. Advanced sequencing technologies reveal valuable information about the time evolution of pathogen sequences. Because researchers can estimate how a mutation behaves under the pressure of natural selection, they are thus able to predict the impact of each mutation -- in terms of survival and propagation -- on the fitness of the pathogen in question. These predictions lend insight to infectious disease epistemology, pathogen evolution, and population dynamics. In a paper published earlier this month in the   SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics , Ryosuke Omori an...

Prince Harry Likes His Bacon Cooked in a Very Specific Way

Image
If you've ever wanted to eat like a royal, here's your chance: a former royal chef's newest cookbook reveals all.   Picture it: you're a   Savoy Hotel-trained chef who's climbed his way from a   chef-de-partie saucier   to a chef inside   Buckingham Palace, and an 8-year-old boy is telling   you   how to make bacon properly. Oh, and that boy is none other than   Prince Harry. That's exactly the situation   Darren McGrady   found himself in some two decades ago. "It was after [the royal family] came back from   Walt Disney World, and I had cooked   bacon   for breakfast," McGrady tells   Food & Wine . "We serve the same bacon you can get in the states, and I broil it just the same. But Prince Harry said to me, 'We had it in America at Disney World, and it's so crispy you can snap it. You have to broil it first, and then you have to put it in some paper towels and place it in the microwave for a minute.' And...
