Porsche executive talks about keeping up with Tesla

When it comes to high-end electric vehicles, one brand comes to mind:   Tesla. But Porsche is fighting for a foothold in the electric auto market, even though, as Porsche North America CEO Klaus Zellmer says, the legacy brand sometimes loses customers to the California disrupter. "We have lots of respect for Tesla – and, yes, I'm sure there are some Porsche customers, that in terms of connectivity, digital stuff in the car and electric battery in the vehicles, didn't find the car that they wanted with Porsche so they bought somewhere else," Zellmer said on CNBC's "Closing Bell." Porsche will debut several new vehicles Friday at the Los Angeles Auto Show. But the German automaker's most exciting vehicle won't even be there. Touted as a major competitor to the Tesla Model S since it was teased as a concept vehicle in 2015,   the Porsche Mission E will debut in 2019, the Verge reported. Porsche has already made a foray into hybrid vehicles w...

Pound v US dollar: GBP hits two-month high on Irish border talks

HOPES of a speedy resolution to the Irish border issue have bolstered the pound today, pushing the GBP/USD exchange rate up to $1.345.  This is the highest exchange rate recorded since late September and reflective of the increased optimism surrounding Brexit negotiations.Speculation that the Brexit stalemate will soon be broken is bolstering support for Sterling and helping the British currency gain on all the majors. Along with the issue of an EU ‘divorce bill’, talks had previously stalled on matters like the Irish border and the rights of EU citizens in the UK. Putting weight behind a possibly imminent resolution to the Irish border, an EU official said: “[Monday’s divorce payment increase] was a substantial breakthrough and has given everyone a sense of optimism that a landing zone is in sight.”  As the UK’s only solid land border with an EU country, the Irish border issue is of critical importance for Northern Ireland as well as the neighbouring Irish counties.Nei...

Scientists win award for Ebola antivirus

Dr. Xiangguo Qiu and Dr. Gary Kobinger of the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg have won this year’s $100,000 Manning Innovation Principal Award for developing ZMapp, the world’s first Ebola disease antivirus. "I am very honoured to be recognized for this award," says Dr. Qiu. "As a scientist, I feel very lucky to see that our persistent efforts have resulted in saving people’s lives."   Qiu and Kobinger’s intellectual achievement spanned a decade’s search to find a treatment against the highly infectious and deadly Ebola virus infection. The largest outbreak occurred from December 2013 to January 2016, when Ebola swept across West Africa, resulting in more than 28,000 cases and more than 11,000 deaths. ZMapp was first used successfully for compassionate, emergency use in humans in July 2014. It’s now the model driving the recent explosion of monoclonal antibody therapies against many other infectious agents such as HIV, Lassa, and Marburg among ...

Prince Harry Likes His Bacon Cooked in a Very Specific Way

Image
If you've ever wanted to eat like a royal, here's your chance: a former royal chef's newest cookbook reveals all.   Picture it: you're a   Savoy Hotel-trained chef who's climbed his way from a   chef-de-partie saucier   to a chef inside   Buckingham Palace, and an 8-year-old boy is telling   you   how to make bacon properly. Oh, and that boy is none other than   Prince Harry. That's exactly the situation   Darren McGrady   found himself in some two decades ago. "It was after [the royal family] came back from   Walt Disney World, and I had cooked   bacon   for breakfast," McGrady tells   Food & Wine . "We serve the same bacon you can get in the states, and I broil it just the same. But Prince Harry said to me, 'We had it in America at Disney World, and it's so crispy you can snap it. You have to broil it first, and then you have to put it in some paper towels and place it in the microwave for a minute.' And...

Yara Shahidi and Her Parents on the Lessons They Learned From Prince

Image
Prince   was not one to send a lot of e-mails, but for teen TV star   Yara Shahidi , he made an exception. It helped that her dad Afshin was the superstar’s   longtime photographer, who has a wealth of stories behind his many photos of the musician, including one from a London concert at which Yara was the youngest fan in attendance.    Prince messaged the politically vocal star a few years ago to tell her, artist to artist, that he was proud of her. Yara’s popular ABC sitcom   Black-ish explores issues of race and class through the everyday experiences of her character Zoey’s family. Next year, Zoey’s story will continue to evolve in a spinoff,   Grown-ish , that will explore many of the same issues in a new setting: college.    Yara still remembers Prince’s fuzzy purple rug from when she was little, but nothing was as enduringly influential as her father’s close working relationship with his world-famous boss. In fact, t...

'Despacito' is on the verge of Grammy history

The Grammys have the strongest contender for a non-English-language winner for song of the year (and record of the year) since Dwight D. Eisenhower was president.    That song, of course, is “Despacito,” the consensus pick for “song of the summer” 2017. The tune — performed by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and rapper Daddy Yankee, with a remix guest-verse boost from Justin Bieber — spent 34 weeks on the Hot 100 and tied for the longest stint atop that chart ever at 16 weeks.    “I believe that we are in a global world right now, and it’s amazing that the U.S. opened its doors, its ears and its heart for a song mainly in Spanish,” said Erika Ender, the Panamanian songwriter who wrote “Despacito” with Fonsi, Yankee, Bieber, Jason "Poo Bear" Boyd and Marty James Garton.     " I also believe that it has to do with the universal language of music. It’s a confirmation that it doesn’t matter the language, what matters is the...
